Lip Reduction

Lip reduction surgery, also known as cheiloplasty, is a cosmetic procedure aimed at decreasing the size of overly prominent lips to achieve a more balanced facial appearance. Prior to the surgery, a consultation with a plastic surgeon is crucial to discuss the patient’s aesthetic goals and review their medical history. On the day of the procedure, local anesthesia or, in some cases, general anesthesia is administered to ensure patient comfort. The surgeon begins by making a horizontal incision along the inner side of the lip, typically along the wet-dry border to minimize visible scarring. Following this, a specific amount of excess tissue, including mucosa and underlying fat, is meticulously excised. The surgeon is careful to maintain the natural contour of the lip while achieving the desired reduction.

Once the excess tissue has been removed, the remaining tissue is sutured together with absorbable stitches, which will dissolve on their own as the lip heals. The entire procedure usually takes about one to two hours, depending on the extent of the reduction required. Postoperative care involves managing swelling and discomfort with prescribed medications, cold compresses, and following a soft diet to avoid disturbing the sutures. Patients are advised to keep their head elevated and to avoid strenuous activities for several weeks. Follow-up appointments are necessary to monitor the healing process and ensure optimal results. Most individuals can resume their normal activities within a week or two but full recovery might take a few months, allowing the final shape and size of the lips to settle.
