Congenital Ptosis
Description
Congenital ptosis, also known as "droopy eyelids present at birth," "blepharoptosis," or "lazy eyelid," is a condition where one or both upper eyelids sag lower than normal from early infancy. This often causes the eyelid to partially or fully cover the pupil, which can lead to blocked vision and, if untreated, may result in "lazy eye" (amblyopia) or developmental delays in children. The main cause is weakness or abnormal development of the muscle responsible for lifting the eyelid, leading to symptoms such as a persistent sleepy appearance and compensatory head tilting. Early recognition and treatment are important not only to protect vision but also to support healthy social and emotional development. In South Korea, specialized clinics offer advanced ptosis correction—including various eyelid lift surgeries—to restore both clear sight and natural eyelid shape, helping children and adults achieve improved confidence and quality of life.
