Chin Surgery

Chin surgery, also known as genioplasty or mentoplasty, is a surgical procedure aimed at reshaping the chin either by enhancement with an implant or reduction surgery on the bone. The procedure typically begins with the administration of anesthesia, which can be either local with sedation or general, depending on the complexity of the surgery and the preference of the patient and surgeon. For augmentation, an incision is usually made inside the mouth along the lower lip or under the chin in order to insert a silicone or other biocompatible implant. This implant is then securely positioned around the existing chin bone to achieve the desired shape and fullness. For a reduction, the surgeon may remove or reshape a portion of the chin bone through a similar incision.

The surgical site is then meticulously sutured to promote optimal healing and minimize scarring. Postoperative care involves bandaging and possible use of a chin strap to support the new shape as well as manage swelling. Patients are advised to follow a prescribed diet, avoid strenuous activities for a few weeks, and maintain proper oral hygiene to mitigate infection risks. Recovery usually spans several weeks, with visible improvements in contour and proportion emerging as swelling subsides. Follow-up appointments are crucial to monitor healing and ensure desired outcomes are achieved.
