Alar Reduction

Alar reduction, also known as alarplasty, is a surgical procedure aimed at narrowing the width of the nostrils to create a more balanced and aesthetically pleasing appearance. The procedure typically begins with the patient being placed under local or general anesthesia to ensure comfort and minimize pain. The surgeon then carefully assesses the patient's nostril area and marks the alar base to determine the amount of tissue to be removed. An incision is made along the marked lines, usually within the natural creases of the nose to minimize visible scarring. Excess skin and soft tissue are excised, and the remaining alar tissue is meticulously sutured back together to reshape the nostrils and achieve the desired contour.

Post-surgery, patients are usually advised to follow specific aftercare instructions to promote healing and minimize complications. This may include applying prescribed antibiotic ointments, avoiding strenuous activities, and attending follow-up appointments for suture removal and progress evaluation. Swelling and bruising are common during the initial recovery period but typically subside within a few weeks. The final results of alar reduction are generally visible once the healing process is complete, contributing to an enhanced, symmetrical appearance of the nasal area. As with any surgical procedure, it is crucial for patients to thoroughly discuss expectations, potential risks, and outcomes with a qualified plastic surgeon prior to undergoing alar reduction.
