Description
A dental crown, often referred to as a cap, is a prosthetic device used to restore a tooth's function and appearance. The procedure typically begins with an initial consultation, where the dentist evaluates the tooth that requires the crown, often utilizing X-rays to assess the extent of damage or decay. If necessary, a root canal might be performed prior to crown placement. During the first appointment, the dentist will numb the tooth and surrounding gums with local anesthesia before reshaping the tooth to accommodate the crown. This involves removing a portion of the tooth's structure to create an adequate base for the crown to sit on. Then, an impression or digital scan of the reshaped tooth is made, which is sent to a dental laboratory where the custom crown is fabricated. A temporary crown is placed over the prepared tooth to protect it while the permanent crown is being made, a process that typically takes about two to three weeks. Once the permanent crown is ready, the patient returns for a second appointment. During this visit, the dentist will remove the temporary crown and check the fit and color of the permanent crown. If both the dentist and the patient are satisfied with the fit and appearance, the dentist will proceed with cementing the crown onto the prepared tooth. The procedure involves cleaning the tooth to remove any debris, then applying dental cement to the inside of the crown before carefully placing it onto the tooth. The dentist will use a special light to harden the cement quickly, ensuring the crown is securely attached. Finally, the dentist will make any necessary adjustments to ensure the patient's bite is comfortable and natural. Proper aftercare involves maintaining good oral hygiene practices and regular dental check-ups to ensure the longevity of the crown.
