Ligamentolysis
Description
**Preparation and Incision**: Ligamentolysis is a surgical procedure intended to release or sever ligaments to alleviate pain, improve joint mobility, or address structural abnormalities. The procedure begins with a detailed preoperative assessment, including imaging studies like MRI or X-rays to identify the affected ligaments. On the day of surgery, the patient is positioned appropriately, often under general anesthesia to ensure immobility and pain control. A tourniquet may be applied to maintain a bloodless field. The surgical area is then sterilized and draped. The surgeon makes a precise incision over the targeted ligament, guided by preoperative planning and imaging. Using specialized instruments, the surrounding tissues are gently retracted to expose the ligament. **Ligament Release and Closure**: Once the ligament is adequately exposed, the surgeon employs fine instruments to carefully release or sever the ligament fibers without damaging nearby structures like nerves and blood vessels. In cases where only partial release is needed, only a portion of the ligament is cut to maintain some degree of structural support. Hemostasis is achieved using cauterization or ligatures if necessary. Post-release, the surgeon may test the joint's range of motion to ensure the desired outcome is achieved. The operative site is then irrigated to reduce infection risk. Finally, the incision is closed in layers using sutures or staples, and the area is dressed with sterile bandages. Postoperative care includes pain management, immobilization if required, and a tailored physical therapy regimen to ensure optimal recovery and restoration of function.
