Inlay Filling
Description
An inlay filling is a dental procedure used to restore a decayed, damaged, or fractured tooth, often when the damage is too extensive for a traditional filling but not severe enough to require a crown. The procedure typically begins with a comprehensive examination and imaging of the tooth to assess the extent of the damage. The dentist will then numb the area with a local anesthetic to ensure the patient's comfort throughout the procedure. Once the area is numb, the dentist removes the decayed or damaged portions of the tooth, thoroughly cleaning and preparing the cavity for the inlay. An impression of the prepared tooth is taken, often using a digital scanner or traditional dental impression materials, to ensure the inlay will fit precisely. Following the impression, the dentist will place a temporary filling to protect the tooth while the inlay is being fabricated, typically in a dental laboratory. The inlay, which is usually made from porcelain, composite resin, or gold, is designed to match the tooth's natural color and contours for a seamless appearance. During the second visit, the dentist removes the temporary filling and ensures the permanent inlay fits perfectly in the prepared cavity. The inlay is then bonded to the tooth using a strong dental adhesive, and the dentist checks the bite to make any necessary adjustments for optimal comfort and function. Finally, the restored tooth is polished to achieve a smooth finish, resulting in a durable and aesthetically pleasing restoration.
