Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to enhance the size and shape of a woman's breasts. The first step in the procedure involves a detailed consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon, during which the patient's health history, aesthetic goals, and expectations are discussed. The surgeon will also explain the different types of implants available, including silicone gel-filled or saline-filled implants, and help the patient choose the appropriate size, shape, and placement method. Preoperative assessments such as blood tests and imaging studies may be conducted to ensure the patient is a suitable candidate for surgery. On the day of the operation, the patient is typically administered general anesthesia for complete comfort.

During the surgery, the plastic surgeon makes an incision in one of three possible locations: along the edge of the areola (periareolar incision), in the breast fold (inframammary incision), or in the armpit (transaxillary incision). The choice of incision type depends on the patient’s anatomy, the type of implant, and the surgeon's recommendation. After making the incision, the surgeon creates a pocket either under the breast tissue or beneath the pectoral muscle, into which the implant is inserted. Once the implants are positioned correctly to achieve the desired look, the incisions are closed with sutures, and dressings or bandages are applied. The entire procedure typically lasts between one to two hours, and most patients can return home the same day. Postoperative care includes managing discomfort with prescribed pain medications, wearing a support bra, and attending follow-up appointments to monitor healing and ensure the best possible results.
