Fat Necrosis Lump
Description
A fat necrosis lump, sometimes called a "firm lump after graft or trauma," is a non-cancerous (benign) hard spot that develops in fatty tissue, most commonly in the breast, after an injury, surgery, or fat transfer such as fat grafting or lipomodelling. Also known as "fatty lump," "oil cyst," or "Balser’s necrosis," these lumps are caused by damaged fat cells that die and form a knot or bump under the skin, which may feel hard, nodular, or sometimes tender. The overlying skin can appear dimpled, red, or bruised, and the lump can be mistaken for more serious conditions since it may look and feel similar to a tumor. Fat necrosis is especially common after procedures like breast reconstruction, augmentation, reduction, or injury to the area. Most fat necrosis lumps go away over time on their own, but if they persist, cause discomfort, or change in appearance, evaluation by a specialist is recommended to rule out other problems and discuss treatment options, which may include minimally invasive drainage or surgical removal for peace of mind and improved cosmetic results.
