Osteopenia
Description
Osteopenia, often called "low bone mass" or "low bone density," is a condition where your bones have less strength and density than normal but aren't yet weak enough to be classified as osteoporosis. Seen as a warning sign or early stage before osteoporosis, osteopenia means your bones are gradually becoming thinner and more fragile, which increases the risk of fractures over time. Because osteopenia rarely causes pain or obvious symptoms, many people may not realize they have it until getting a bone density scan. Key risk factors include age, family history, hormone changes (especially after menopause), low calcium or vitamin D intake, and lifestyle habits like poor diet, inactivity, smoking, or heavy alcohol use. Recognizing osteopenia early allows you to take important steps to protect your bone health—such as improving your nutrition, staying active, and quitting unhealthy habits—to help prevent progression to more serious bone loss and osteoporosis.
