Empty Nose Sensation
Description
Empty nose sensation, sometimes called Empty Nose Syndrome (ENS), secondary atrophic rhinitis, or nasal atrophy, refers to a paradoxical feeling of nasal congestion or blockage even when the nasal airways appear wide open after procedures like turbinate reduction or turbinectomy. This troubling sensation arises from changes in airflow dynamics inside the nose: once the turbinates are reduced or removed, the air moves differently and fails to stimulate the normal sensors lining the nasal passages. As a result, patients may feel as though their nose is “too open” or that they can’t breathe well, despite having a clear airway. Common symptoms include persistent nasal dryness, crusting, burning, lack of normal airflow sensation, and sometimes difficulty with taste or smell. These changes in airflow and moisture balance not only cause physical discomfort but can also significantly impact emotional well-being, making it important to seek experienced care if you are considering or have undergone nasal surgery.
